A few weeks ago I wanted to write about seven young women in my developmental writing class. Their ages span two generations, their backgrounds are diverse, and each has challenges I’ve never had to face. Yet they share a common aspiration: to improve their lives by opening doors that higher education can unlock.
As their writing teacher, I wanted to find the right words to let them know how special they are – words they might hear in their heads if they ever doubt themselves. Turns out it wasn’t just the words I wanted to share. I wanted them to see themselves as I see them: inquisitive, determined, bright, entertaining, motivating. And inspirational.
The photo was a last-day-of-class gift to them – and me. I think it says it all.
